NORMAL TEEN BEHAVIOR OR RED FLAG?

"Sari, is this normal behavior, or does my child need support or therapy?"

&

"Are they going to be ok?"

These are the most common questions I get asked as a therapist of more than 15 years working with parents and adolescents.  And, I will say...when you're a parent with trauma or getting triggered, answering this becomes even more anxiety provoking and confusing.

So, honestly? I’m SO glad you’re asking.

Because, truly, answering those questions and knowing exactly what to do really does impact the future of your child as well as your relationship.

_NZF8756_edited.jpg

You’re asking because you care, you’re paying attention, and let’s face it…the tween and teen stage can be so up and down with mood swings where one moment they are loud and throwing attitude and the next they are retreating and you’re wondering if you’ll ever truly know what’s going on with them. It inevitably leaves you wondering, is this normal or something more serious that needs attention?

The truth is, no matter what the answer, there is SO much you can do to respond to whatever phase they’re in, & no matter where you are in your healing journey.  But that clarity usually does not come from a late-night Google search, a quick AI answer, or random advice that only looks at development and milestones without the nuance of your actual child, your relationship, and the patterns you’re seeing.

You need a way to understand what’s happening beneath the behavior, so you can feel more confident about what’s in the range of normal development, what needs closer attention, and what to do next.

YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF TRYING TO DECIPER, IS THIS...

moodiness OR depression

privacy OR secrecy

independence OR pulling away

attitude OR something deeper

typical stress OR anxiety

experimentation OR risk

normal OR not...HELP!

AND THIS IS NOT JUST ABOUT WANTING TO FEEL LESS ANXIOUS AS A PARENT.

It matters because the way you understand and respond to these moments can shape whether your child feels seen, supported, and guided right now, and whether they learn to come toward you with the harder things as they grow.

Sometimes your child needs space.
Sometimes they need structure.
Sometimes they need connection.
Sometimes they need professional support.

AND WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE IT IS,

IT'S EASY TO GET STUCK IN THE FEAR:

What if I miss something important?

So, as a response, maybe you find yourself…

  • overreacting

  • underreacting

  • freezing

  • lecturing

  • panicking

  • overcompensating

  • second-guessing yourself

Not because you don’t know your child.

Because this stage is confusing, the stakes are high, and you can be an incredibly observant parent and still second-guess what you’re seeing. Especially when the same behavior could mean two very different things, and your child may need two very different responses from you.

HERE'S THE TRUTH:

THIS MATTERS

The way you respond in these moments matters.

Because if your child is going through something developmentally normal, they may need you to give it room to breathe without turning every mood, attitude, or shutdown into a crisis (even though it can feel like a crisis inside of you).

But if something deeper is going on, they may need you to notice sooner, lean in differently, and know when it’s time to bring in more support.

That’s why this question can feel so loaded.
Because it’s not just, “How do I stop spiraling?”
It’s, “How do I understand what my child actually needs right now?”

The goal is NOT to diagnose your child from a course.  The goal is to help you get clearer, steadier, and more observant so you can respond with intention instead of triggered, panicked, avoiding, or guessing.

This framework will help you decide:

  • what to let breathe

  • what to monitor

  • what to address directly and exactly how

  • when to bring in extra support

NORMAL TEEN BEHAVIOR
OR RED FLAG?

THIS IS WHY I CREATED

NORMAL TEEN BEHAVIOR
OR RED FLAG?

A therapist's framework to help you decode what's really going on, respond with confidence, and protect your child's well-being and your relationship.

In less than 1 hour, you’ll learn how to identify whether your child’s behavior may be in the Green, Yellow, or Red Zone, so you can better understand what may be developmentally normal, what needs closer attention, and what may require a higher level of support.

This is guidance that goes deeper than a quick Google search or AI answer, because your child is not a checklist of developmental milestones. Their behavior exists in the context of their nervous system, friendships, school stress, identity development, family dynamics, and your relationship with them.

And no matter what zone the behavior falls into, you’ll walk away knowing how to respond with more clarity, connection, and direction.

Because these moments matter.

The way you respond can help your child feel seen instead of judged, supported instead of alone, and more likely to move toward you instead of away from you when things feel big, confusing, or overwhelming.

And over time, that can impact so much more than the moment you’re in. It can shape how they navigate friendships, school stress, performance, anxiety, risk, and whether they keep coming to you when life gets hard.

HERE'S WHAT WILL SHIFT.
YOU'LL GO FROM...

Confused about what you're seeing

Clear on what may be normal, what needs closer attention, and what may need more support

Stuck between ignoring it and overreacting

Knowing when to let it breathe, when to lean in, and when to step in

Spiraling through worst-case scenarios

Using a clear framework to observe what is actually happening

Unsure if your child needs space, structure, connection, or support

Better able to respond to what they actually need in the moment

Afraid of missing something important

More equipped to notice patterns, ask better questions, and take the next step

Reacting from fear, panic, or frustration

Responding in a way that helps your child feel seen, supported, and guided

So you can stop second-guessing every behavior and start using a therapist-created framework to understand what you’re seeing, what your child may need, and when to lean in, step in, or get more support.

Because you’re not supposed to automatically know what warrants more attention, what needs more support, or what may simply need time, space, and connection

WHY SARI?

So why the heck trust me to guide you through this?

  • I have more than 15 years of clinical experience as a licensed marriage and family therapist and the founder of SoCal Individual, Family, & Trauma Therapy.

  • I train clinicians nationally on trauma, parenting, adolescents, and family dynamics, so this framework is grounded in both clinical expertise and real-life parenting moments.

  • I specialize in trauma, adolescents, parenting, and family dynamics, so I’m always looking at both sides of the question: what may be developmentally normal, and what may be signaling that something underneath needs more support.

  • I also know that parents are not supposed to automatically know how to handle every shutdown, outburst, withdrawal, spiral, or “is this normal?” moment. That’s why I care so much about creating parenting support that is accessible, digestible, and mindful of the responsibility, weight, and balancing act you’re carrying.

And, I truly get it. I’m a therapist, but I’m also a mom of 2. A human being who lives with many of these same worries and fears alongside you, and who comes back to this exact framework when I feel overwhelmed, unsure, or lost.

So you can feel less activated, respond with more intention, and set your child, their future, and your relationship up for more connection, support, and success.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS THIS ONLY FOR PARENTS OF TWEENS AND TEENS?

This course is designed for parents of children ages 8-18 who are trying to understand whether a behavior is developmentally normal or may need more attention. Some parts of the course, like how to respond to behavior, can be helpful for parents of kids outside that age range too.

WILL THIS TELL ME IF MY CHILD NEEDS THERAPY?

It won’t diagnose or replace professional support, but it will help you think through what you’re seeing and whether extra support may be needed.

WHAT IF I'M ALREADY REALLY WORRIED?

If there is immediate safety concern, seek professional or emergency support. If you’re not in immediate crisis but feel unsure, this course can help you organize what you’re noticing and think through your next step.

HOW LONG IS IT?

The course is designed to be completed in about 1 hour.

DO I GET LIFETIME ACCESS?

Yup.  I want you to be able to refer back to this framework over and over. Because the rollercoaster of emotions, moods, and behavior changes through this stage may bring up new questions and worries as your child grows.
